  1. Lonely elderly people are at a higher risk of the onset of disability

  2. Loneliness and isolation’s effects on mortality exceeds the impact of risks such as obesity and cigarette smoking, with an estimated mortality increase of 26%

  3. This is in part due to loneliness increasing both high blood pressure and the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke

  4. Elderly isolation can also have a dramatic effect on mental health, with a higher risk of cognitive decline and an estimated 64% increase in dementia risk, alongside a higher risk of depression 

When Loneliness Is Most Likely To Strike  

Combatting loneliness is an important issue that often gets overlooked. As people get older, they may lose friends and family or even their spouse. These tragic events can often spark a change in attitude, with some people becoming very withdrawn and losing their confidence altogether.  

Another time when loneliness becomes a bigger issue than usual is during the holiday season. These feelings can also intensify during dates of significance, which may bring back painful memories of lost loved ones.  

Things You Can Do To Help Yourself Overcome Loneliness

Organisations like Age UK offer befriending services, where you can talk to people over the phone or meet up with them face to face to share life stories and build valuable new friendships.
